Daily Roundup: Sept 18, 2020

September 18, 2020

Hi everyone, here is Rick's Roundup for September 18th

  • The federal government has abandoned its attempt to make a trade deal with China. This is understandable, given the nature of our relationship with China, and their human rights abuses. That said, it would be great if our federal government sought to reignite TPP trade talks and bring the US back to the negotiating table. A Trans-Pacific Partnership, with the US, would expand free trade in the region without China.
  • 100 Ex diplomats have urged the Canadian government to trade Meng in exchange for Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig. We all want the two Michaels to return home safely, but making this trade would set a dangerous precedent. Making the exchange would send a signal that any state, or non state actor, could arrest, detain, or kidnap Canadians abroad in an attempt to negotiate with Canada. We can't have that.
  • Canada needs access to rapid Covid19 tests. This great op-ed in the National Post explains how ridiculous it is that Canadians don't have access to these rapid tests. Luckily, Erin O'Toole has pressed the government on this and is actively pushing for Canadians to have access to these tests.

Before asking you for money for our Edmonton Strathcona campaign, we’re in the final stages of paying off expenses from my 2020 Conservative leadership campaign, which was cut short in early March by the COVID-19 pandemic. Would you help us with that? Tax receipts are issued – Click here to be taken to my donation page.
