Canada's NDP and the Chinese Communist Party

Canada's NDP and the Chinese Communist Party

November 23, 2020

Check out this picture below and the name in the right hand column circled in yellow.

Niki Ashton is a high profile NDP Member of Parliament from Manitoba. She’s a former 2017 NDP leadership candidate, is the Party’s critic for Transport, and Deputy Critic for Women and Gender Equality.

She’s the headline guest on a  Zoom call that’s scheduled for Tuesday night in support of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou. Meng is currently under house arrest in a Vancouver mansion as she fights extradition proceedings that could see her go to the US to face fraud charges.

As we all know, in retaliation for Canada arresting Meng at the request of the US government, the Chinese Communist Party has arrested two Canadians in what is clearly an act of retaliation.

Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig have been held for more that 700 days now in a hellhole Chinese prison. They are political prisoners, deprived of legal representation or contact with the outside world. They have been kidnapped and unjustly prisoned by China because Canada followed the rule of law in arresting Meng.

So, if a high profile NDP Member of Parliament like Niki Ashton headlines a Zoom call to “Free Meng”, does that mean that the NDP supports the Chinese Communist Party over the rule of law in Canada?

Which brings us to Heather McPherson, the NDP Member of Parliament for Edmonton Strathcona. She’s the Party’s Deputy Critic for Foreign Affairs. You’d think she might have some views on this question. Unless, of course, she supports Niki Ashton being on the “Free Meng” Zoom call.

Where does Ms. McPherson stand on the Meng issue? Does she side with the rule of law or with the Chinese Communist Party? Does she support the jailing of two Canadians as political prisoners?

It’s hard to say. Here’s what we’ve found so far:

  • Ms. McPherson has never tweeted about freeing the two Michaels
  • Ms. McPherson has never spoken out to the media about the two Michaels. She has spoken out about the genocide in China, but we haven’t been able to see her say anything publicly about freeing Michael Spavor or Michael Kovrig
  • According to the House of Commons database, Ms. McPherson has never said anything in the House about the two Michaels.

Did we miss anything? If so, please let us know. Has she called for the release of the two Michaels? It doesn’t look like it – if she has, it’s not been easy to find.

This should not be a difficult call for any Member of Parliament in Canada. Either you are for the rule of law and support the release of the two Michaels along with the continued extradition proceedings for Meng Wanzhou, or else you side with the Chinese Communist Party.

If elected MP for Edmonton Strathcona, you know exactly where I stand: strongly and vocally in favour of the rule of law.

It’s time Ms. McPherson made it clear where she stands.
